The Kunafa Love!

By Posted on 0 2 m read 84 views

Knafa/Kunafe/Kunafah spelled differently in most of the restaurant menus is one of my most favorite desserts in the whole wide world! If there is one dessert that rules as the Queen of Arabic sweets, I would nominate Kunafe Nabulsia, the sticky pastry made of gooey sweet cheese sandwiched between layers of shredded kunafe pastry. This specialty from the Palestinian city of Nablus is prepared in enormous round or square trays, saturated with rose-scented syrup, cut into diamond-shaped slabs and garnished with chopped pistachios.

I got introduced to Kunafa by my ex-colleagues in Kuwait. We always had a Thursday breakfast meeting at work in Kuwait and my colleagues, all being Arabs from Lebanon, Egypt and Kuwait, made it a point to ‘eat like a king’ on Thursdays for sure, even if we starve on other mornings. Reason being food – food brings people together, creating it’s own magic and leaving a sense of belonging with who ever you share it. And thus Thursday mornings introduced Kunafe into my life and I fell in love with it!

The next stage of falling in love with Kunafe was the trip to Istanbul, Turkey – The land of Kunafe! Though this Arabic dessert has it’s roots grounded to Lebanon, Turkey has its own tales to tell about Kunafe.  Hafiz Mustafa serves one of the most awesomely delicious Kunafe in Istanbul and the place is always crowded with people waiting in long queues to get a bite of this piping hot heavenly dessert. Every day of my stay in Turkey, I made sure I devoured Kunafe  to sleep. Soul food I say.

My search for the best Kunafe in Abu Dhabi was a mission now.I have tried varieties of it in a lot of local restaurants in and around the city. And then I landed at Ibsais Sweets.
